Blackberry Outage – What can be Learned

Thankfully to the relief of millions of users worldwide, Blackberry services seem to have finally been restored to a normal operating service.

The situation though over the past few days is not one Blackberry makers RIM will wish to remember.  Its highly regarded brand, which was ranked 36th in the The BrandFinance® Top 500 Telecom Brands 2011, reputation and image may now be tarnished.

Yesterday, the blackout to services worsened as users in the United States and the Far East joined users in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India and Latin America in experiencing disruption to emailing, messaging and web browsing. Many of the 70 million Blackberry users have taken to Twitter and other social media platforms to vent their anger and frustration at the disruption to services.

You therefore have to ask whether a fully documented Business Continuity Plan/Process was in place and whether all those concerned in debacle had immediate access to it?

At Casewise, we have worked with a number of organizations over the years to model and improve business processes which aid Business Continuity Planning and Risk Management/Reduction and form part of their overall Enterprise Architecture.

Ask yourself a couple of questions…

  1. Does my organization have in place a fully documented Business Continuity Plan?
  2. Where can I find this documentation/model and how up-to-date is it?

If you answered no, or not sure, maybe its time you gave Casewise a call!
